Education and research

Kuopio Science Park in Savilahti is a unique meeting place for the different fields of science, which enhances innovative research work.



The University of Eastern Finland (UEF) is the most wide ranging university in Finland. The special areas of its expertise are health and well-being, forests and the environment and also new technologies and materials. UEF has three campuses in Kuopio, Joensuu and Savonlinna. There are 15 000 students.

Savonia University of Applied Sciences has 6 000 students at its campuses in Kuopio, Varkaus and Iisalmi. The main areas of research and development are primary production and foodstuffs, energy, the environment and safety, welfare products and services and also integrated product development.

Savo Consortium for Education and Ylä-Savo Vocational College are responsible for versatile vocational training of youth and adults.

The Kuopio region is home to a unique and continuously growing security cluster that focuses on the management of disturbances in society and on safeguarding security. The Emergency Services College is a nationwide training centre for the security sector. Crisis Management Centre Finland trains experts for duties in international civilian crisis management and peacebuilding. 

Research institutes

The National Institute for Health and Welfare’s department of environmental health is one of the leading centres for environmental health in Europe. Its task is to anticipate, prevent and control threats to environmental health.

Finnish Meteorological Institute studies in particular atmospheric fine particles and their effects on climate and health. Related to research on fine particles and health it studies the roles of outdoor air and living on indoor air quality. Also, it develops a research method that can be used to determine the harmfulness of air pollutants in conditions simulating real life exposures.

The Geological Survey of Finland has a research group specializing in mining environments in Kuopio. It is an expert in the environmental aspects of mining spoil, the modelling of the drift pattern of water and pollutants, geochemical risk assessments of the soil and sediments and geochemical passive water purification methods.

VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland is the leading research and technology company in the Nordic countries.

Natural Resources Institute Finland has three research units in Pohjois-Savo.

  • The Tervo fish farm is the breeding nucleus for the national selective breeding program for rainbow trout and European whitefish. According to the estimates, about 80 % of locally produced rainbow trout in Finland is originating from the breeding program.
  • In Suonenjoki Reseach Unit the main research topic is forest regeneration including seed procurement, seedling production, plant health, regeneration operations and young stand management studied from biological, technological and economical point of view. The research infrastructure consist of research nursery, the only one in Nordic countries, with up-to-date growing chambers and experimental greenhouses as well as seed, soil and plant pathology laboratories with modern instruments.
  • Maaninka research platform is a production oriented dairy farm which serves widely Finnish livestock production sector in areas of grass and milk production, animal behavior and welfare, technological development and testing and bioenergy. It has a leading role in grassland science in Finland.
